Christmas Sign - Inkscape

One more for the year. This is a design I did from a yard sign we had and I thought it would make a nice card, window decoration, Santa Village element etc.

I've tried something different with the files. I've made one for SCAL2/3, one for eCAL for the eclips, the .svg and the .jpg. The cutting files are on two pages each: one for print2cut and one for paper piecing. So be sure and look at the pages within SCAL or eCAL. MTC users would use the svg file.

I'm not totally happy with the scarves but if you are paper piecing or using the svg you can play around with it to make it look better.

Mrs. Claus - Inkscape

Geeeez it is getting harder and harder to design given all the cutters and software for our craft. I think I spent as much time testing and cutting this file in both SCAL2 and eCAL to ensure that at least the cutters for those two work, I have to assume that SCAL3 for other cutters work.

Enough whining...onward to the design.

I actually did draw this my very own self. I had some help from a tutorial on how to draw a girl and modified it to suit Mrs. Claus. (see Additional Resources below for a link to the tutorial I used).

I've done a print/cut on her in both eCAL for the Sizzix eclips and the E with SCAL2. I did not cut all of the pieces because I don't do well piecing anymore but I'm confident that all the big pieces cut. The face pieces may be better done by and as they are small.

I'm providing a .jpg for print/cut with the outline around for those who want to cut the old fashion way, with SCISSORS. Importing the .svg file allows you to either print with or without the outline mat or do a print/cut around. (see what I mean about getting complicated).

I also did not add decorations to the apron, I wanted to but there were going to be too many pieces that were subjective....so have at it. I think it could be decorated a lot more.

Let me know if you have any problems, especially if you are using different software/cutters than the ones I have.

Elf Ice Skating - Inkscape

I'm still playing with KR Color Me font/dingbat. Only about 5 to go that are good for cutting but you can do so many things with the images.

Consider cutting back to back to make a tree ornament. Bag tags are a good idea as well.

Remove the color and print large for the little ones to color.

Santa with Bag - Inkscape Printable DigiStamp

Something new for me a printable. It is designed to be printed, not cut, since I used a bunch of filters and extensions in Inkscape that SCAL doesn't like and I assume MTC won't either. You can convert it to a cut file using Inkscape.

As you can see I've included a faux mat line to make it easy to manually trim around after you've printed.

Inkscape - to make into a cut file

the shadowing on the Santa pieces is done with a filter (filter/shadows and glows/inner shadow) that SCAL won't recognize so it must be removed: filter/remove filter
the hatching pattern on the bag is a layer unto itself and you delete it.
change the mat line to a solid line use fill/stroke/stroke style
to make a digistamp to color with pens etc. select all fill/remove fill.
separate the pieces save as a new file and it is ready for a print/cut.

I hope this is clear for the Inkscape folk and would love to know if it works for you.

Elf on Rocking Horse Inkscape PnC

Is this cute or what? I've found a wonderful font called KR Christmas Color Me . It is great as a digistamp if you are one of those talented designers who can color, unfortunately I am not so I converted the font to a path in Inkscape and then filled in the pieces with color. I did my best to make it a cut file for the paper piecers but I'll just do print/cut. I always take the easy way.

It opens and separates just fine in SCAL2 so I'm confident that it will work with other cutting software should you want to cut the pieces.

Woman in Mirror Silhouette - Inkscape vector

More silhouettes this week. This was created to fulfill a request on one of the forums I visit.

Whether you cut or print and cut this is a very flexible design with multiple pieces to mix/match. There is a .png file for printing and an svg to use to print and cut.

You can change the color in the svg file for another unique look.

I envision it on an embossed apture card, how about your ideas?

The stripe background wallpaper is done with object/fill/stroke/pattern/stripe and the opacity dropped down a bit. Of course any background paper that floats your boat will do.

Victorian Man under Lamp Post - Inkscape

This is a little different for me as I am using as the main element in this design a file I got from a friend. She was having problems with finishing her design and I loved the image and helped her get where she wanted to go with it.

I got involved in my head and just kept on adding elements to the design and came up with what I think would make a different card for the holidays.

I would appreciate it (and so would she) if you would visit Granny Ma's Creative Blog and see all her other wonderful files. I thank her for her gracious consent for me to share her file with my interpretation.

The svg file includes all you see in the picture. I use print/cut alot but all the pieces are there and if you can find a nice piece of background paper with the gradient you can cut the oval or PnC the oval with the cobblestones and add the three images, or PnC the oval with the cobblestones and the shadow. OR use it as a digi-stamp and paint or chalk it. Lots of ways to play.

Since GrannyCarol and I are sharing we'd both be pleased to see what you do with it.

A little aside. I chose to your lamp post as opposed to lamppost because it looked odd. Dictionary says one word but two words looks better, so you english teachers out there please forgive me!

Cauldron Halloween Inkscape Vector

How about a witch's cauldron for your Halloween decorations? I'm not too happy with the goo but you clever folk can play with it to make it your own. Lots of mix/match here for other projects.

Everything cuts well, even the fire. Get out some of your patterned paper and give the goo, the logs and the fire some gradient or texture.

Haunted House Inkscape Vector

I know there are a bunch of Haunted House's out there but I needed the drawing practice and saw a drawing lesson for the house and tried it.

How about gathering up a collection of them and create a neighborhood with all of them? Since this is an Inkscape file you have the opportunity or challenge to change it. If you select the brown layer and do a path/breakapart you can select each door or window to make cutting pieces should you want to put yellow or something in the window. I've made a gray mat behind so you could slip the window colored pieces between the two pieces and Viola light.

Design Tips

Brown paper bags make great paper for the house. It even embosses well. Try that to give the house some texture.
Use a stamp pad to rub over the house to give it more of a distressed look.
Add a path up to the house to "welcome" the trick or treaters

Add some bats, owls and maybe a witch and this house is yours.

I have been busy doing other things and sorta abandoned my poor Blog, it really wants to fed more regularly you know. Today I just went into the stash of designs I'd worked on but never posted and found one. This is another in the vehicle camper series.

I did not decorate the van after all as I saw 1960's flower children, peace signs, etc (yes I am that old) and decided instead of cluttering up the van with them I'd let you do whatever.

Tree Smiling - Inkscape

I've been practicing with the bezier tool lately and there was a request for a family tree that was smiling that you could add dates to. So I practiced and here is the result.

Obviously you don't need the face if you just want a tree! The leaves are just clouds from the SCAL shapes table that I copy/pasted into the Inkscape file.

Hope you have a use for it since I really like it and wanted to share. It should cut nicely in any program you have for your cutter, or use your pens, chalk and treat it like a digi-stamp. Play with the bezier tool and add more detail or just draw....a great way to spend a day!

I see it with pictures or birth dates in the leaves. If you do something please let me know where you post so I can see them. A little credit or link to this post would be appreciated.

Spirals as Background Paper - Inkscape vector

OK, so I'm back to making background papers for you. The benefit of having background papers you make yourself in Inkscape is the ability to change the stroke and fill to different colors to coordinate with your project. I made this one high contrast so you could see the pattern. The more subtle color contract is really beautiful but doesn't photo too well.

The pattern for the spirals came about with a new video from Carolyn at CuttingTime and I'll have a link below for you to view. Carolyn has some great tips for using the spiral clump she makes to make cut outs, I just did a print background, but you should really try her method.

The pattern was created with the large clump and Tiled Clones. The smaller pattern was a size reduction of the larger image that I make into a line and aligned and then copy and pasted into place. I did try to do the Tiled Clones with the smaller ones but I couldn't figure out how to get the spacing correct to fit into the larger pattern. Who knows someone of my friends may see this and tell me how I could have done it.

The spirals have a stroke color with no fill. According to the instructions in the video I increased the size of the stroke until I got the effect I wanted. Then I combined all of the design and made the rectangle border and played with fill color on the rectangle and stroke color on the spirals.

You can convert the image to a png to take to your printer. If I wanted a 5x7" background paper I just did a screen capture of a piece of the whole at 5x7 since it is really easy on my Mac to do it. I don't know if you can capture something in the size you want with a PC, again someone may come along and tell me how, maybe YOU. This methods saves INK when you only need a smaller size piece of paper to work with.

Mama Bear - Inkscape vector

OK, over tutorials for awhile. Too many Birthdays needing cards. This one is for my DIL (well although she will like it, my GD will LOVE it). Lots of pieces to cut but I just printed the whole thing since paper piecing is not my thing anymore. Works both ways with a little work and some nice background paper. If I were to paper piece I'd still draw in the most of the face pieces, just me maybe and the small size of the eyes and mouth.

This is how it turned out printed on matte photo paper.
Steps for a Print copy

In Inkscape I assembled the Bear and grouped the whole image.
Then added a png of some background paper to move her onto.
Added the text
Took a screen capture of the of the background and the bear to take into a photo editing program to resize and print.

Tutorial: Star Medallion and Tiled Clones - Inkscape vector

I think I've done enough instruction on HOW TO do tiled clones in my video tutorials so I won't repeat the step by step here. What I do have is a really cool star shape that I made into a medallion for PnC and then I worked it into tiled clones for background papers for to print. All right here in one place.

Use these settings for creating your own star medallion. Use these settings, to create background papers from the medallion

TIPS

This design is really a memory hog and will certainly slow Inkscape down to a crawl if you make too many rows and colums. I found that 5x5 or 6x6 is plenty. You can copy/paste the created tiles and align/distribute to align them, or you can just resize. Play with it a bit.
You can change the color of both the fill and the stroke.
Do a screen capture to convert the .svg to a .jpg or .png for easier printing and resizing, save the original .svg to have available for color changes.
To save printer ink print the tiles onto colored paper/card stock instead of printing a background color.

Alternate Tiled Clones in Color

Paper with Happy Birthday

Making background papers and playing with how to design them I've been doing a lot with tiled clones lately and in the pursuit of knowledge I came up with this design. You can add the Happy Birthday with stamps or with a font and rotate to the angle you want and copy/paste in place.

I showed it off to my Inkscape pals on Inkscape Cutting Design who wanted my "recipe". Although it takes a lot of time and tries to get a video done it is easier than trying to figure out how to write it down and have all the graphics one needs to do it, hence this video. Most intermediate users of Inkshape will do fine I think, beginners may have a problem even tho I strive to go step by step.

One drawback of the technique is that it has so many variables to do things with and all are dependent on size, kind, shape etc. so the video is a broad brush with specifics to this design. It hopefully will set you on your way to creating your own patterns. Here's the final product from the video.

Here are the settings for doing this particular design in the Tiled Clones menu. These are the only settings I changed from the default.

Printing Your Design

You take the svg and convert it to a .jpg or png and resize it to your specifications. It seems better to make larger patterns and scale them down, the to scale up, but again the pattern will matter.

See my other videos on Tiled Clones in the video tutorial section on the right hand side of the page, or just scroll down as they will show up for a while yet before rolling off.

Motorhome - Inkscape Vector

Print/Cut Tiled Clone Elements - Inkscape

I've tried various ways to make my background papers in Inkscape to create print/cut elements for my cutter. After a lot of video's on Tiled Clones and Clip/Set I finally found a way that works for me! There are for sure many other ways but this consistently works on my Mac with Inkscape 0.48 and my SureCutsAlot2 likes it as well. Triple WIN.

There is no file to download just a video to "teach you how to fish" my way.

With all the cutters and cutter software around now it is a little harder to give explicit instructions for print/cut as both the cutter and the software vary too much.

I use SCAL2 on a Mac with the "unnamed" cutter until I can justify buying another one. If you have problems with anything here, please don't hesitate to email me or leave a comment and I'll respond as best I can.

I hope you try it and then share the link to the video with others who want to learn how to fish too.

Mantle Clock - Inkscape vector

Every time you draw the petal something different will happen depending on the size of the petal, the rotation point, the number of petals (even number if you want the layer effect).

Play with this changing the shapes, the number of petals etc....you will be amazed at what you get. I see a lot of tree ornaments for the holidays don't you?

Cool Dude Father's Day - Inkscape vector

I hardly ever enter a challenge since I mostly do elements but I had to do a Father's Day card anyway and now was the time.

I did this for the Alota Challenge #59, "Check it Out" using pieces I mostly already had. Stop by and see all the other challenge entries as there are some really sweet ones already.

I sort my elements by kind, not project, as I use them over and over again. I have folders for mannequin's, clothes, background papers, etc.

Resource

I created the checkerboard pattern for both the swatch for the jacket and the check border using Inkscape. Pattern paper done with Clone Tiles, and the border using Interpolate Paths. The background paper is a filter converted to a bitmap.

You will need to figure out how to print/cut the background pieces as the cutting world has gotten so complicated lately with all the new cutters and software coming in that I hesitate to provide instructions on how you do all of this. I use SCAL2 on the cutter we don't talk about anymore.

Check out You Tube or Google Print/Cut and you are bound to find techniques for SCAL, MTC, eCraft and probably more by now. I've gotten some good ideas from them.

Inkscape Book Review

Something a little different this week. "learning how to fish" is my motto so I took a break and went back to learning, or relearning myself. I've been doing Inkscape for several years now and do get done what I want. I'm self taught, with the help of lots of videos and tutorials by others who came before me. I'd never seen a "book" that did anything for me until I got ahold of Inkscape 0.48 Illustrator's Cookbook.

Sample Chapter
I got the sample chapter and started in. It didn't take long for me to be excited about the style and "recipe" approach used in the book. As I worked through the chapter doing the recipes I discovered several new, for me, ways of doing what I had been doing. I HAD TO HAVE THE WHOLE BOOK!

With the complete book before me I started at the beginning, and am continuing to work it recipe by recipe. You really want to approach it this way as there are so many features, shortcuts, tricks and different ways of doing things that I didn't know or hadn't used.

Bear in mind that this book is not written for CUTTERS and as time goes by I'll do some take off's from the recipes to adapt them for cutting files. There is so much to learn and you'll be creating some beautiful intricate images that PRINT beautifully. These were done using Interpolating sub-paths from Chapter 5.

Do give it a try... Take your time, do a recipe then go off and play with what you learned, trying different ways of creating with what you learned...you'll love it.

Charm Bracelet Inkscape

Just playing around and made this charm bracelet. I thought it might be good for MOM for Mother's Day. I've left the charms separate from the bracelet so that you can arrange as suits you or maybe you want to do some different ones, you can do a UNION to hook them altogether to make it one cut.

SCAL users: I suggest you do a "simplify" in SCALbefore you cut. it will cut faster.

I've also included the bracelet image as a circle that would make a lovely frame.

Cut on gold or silver glitter paper or sprinkled with glitter on an embossed background would really make it POP!. Adding your own sentiment, either by cutting, penning, or stamping, is how you can make it yours, and I'd love to see any finished cards.

Bunny Card for Easter - Inkscape

When I finished this card it made me smile. I don't usually do "cute" but I think I did this time.

There are three files to download depending on what you want: an Inkscape file and a SCAL one and a png. The two background papers are not included.

Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL2)
This pic is from SCAL. I did a "place image" so that you could just print the whole card and cut a rectangle mat around it. I've separated all the pieces into named layers to make it a bit simpler to cut the pieces. For some reason the little blue eyes didn't come through but a blue marker will take care of that.

I've also done a path/simplify on all of the pieces. SCAL does a much better job than Inkscape of smoothing out the nodes automatically. You'll want to download both the scut file and the png file if you want them both.

Inkscape
In Inkscape I did not put the pieces into layers as I find they get in the way of SCAL. If you are using something other than SCAL you may want to do the layers thing to make cutting easier for color separation.

A bunny is a bunny and a "google" search will find you any number of copyright free images to use. I made the clouds but there are lots of those images around too. SCAL has them on them in the shapes table.

Other software and cutters

I've never heard that the Inkscape files do not work for MTC users or for those people with cutters that cut directly but you'd just have to try it. I'd appreciate knowing if there is a problem that I could be aware of.

Happy Birthday Present Subway Art - Inkscape

I've tried to KIS so that all of cutters, and non-cutters can make use of this file and the newbies and not so newbies can make use of it too. I might have overdone it, but here goes.

This design started with my playing with Subway Art. and ended up as a non-cuttable element, I think. Maybe done large but I don't think so. Hence I've broken up the various options into these files so you only download the one you can work with. Click on the image to enlarge.

There are 4 files.

The svg file can be altered in Inkscape - DOWNLOAD the All svg file

I have grouped the text to make it easy to move. All you need to do is ungroup the mesh part to change the text colors, sizes or add/subtract what you don't want, even make a different background. Depending on your cutter you might need to convert to the mesh block into a bitmap. I'm not sure how all the cutters work with print/cut.

The print/cut file - DOWNLOAD the combo svg/jpg file

Use this one to print the mesh and cut the backgrounds you can alter the box but not the text - combo of a .jpg image and cutable box. You can print the image directly from Inkscape and use the background pieces as acut file. You can use the mesh image and create a different background; package or frame or .....

The print only for those who just want to print the whole thing (like me) DOWNLOAD the jpg only

This file cannot be altered or traced I'm pretty sure, only resized.

A mat solid background that can be used with print/cut for just box. Ensure that if you resize the .jpg you also resize the mat. DOWNLOAD THE MAT

I printed the whole image and cut around it on my cutter using the mat background and attached to cardstock that I had embossed.

Floral/Easter Files

I been very busy. I discovered the Teresa Collins StampMaker System and I've made some designs for use with the machine.

Photo Negatives

I liked the design so much I made SCUT (sure cuts a lot) files, .svg file and here is the result. You will have a lot of download options.

All were created in Inkscape and adapted for use by cutters, print and cut folk and the stamp makers.

I used one element from the font Printer Ornaments 1. This is a free download font.

Using different techniques in Inkscape all of these fell out. Pattern Along Path, Interpolate, Bend and may some more but I forget.

Quatrefoil Border -Inkscape

My friend Carolyn (http://cuttingtime.blogspot.com) posted a wonderful file and some great instructions on our Inkscape forum this week (http:inkscapecuttingdesign.com) that caught my attention. I've played with quatrefoil designs ever since and came up with this border design.

In the attached .svg file, for download, are all the pieces to make your own borders. These do well as digistamps, print/cut or just cut on your digital cutter/ A real mix/match .svg file. You may also just grab this picture for your digistamping.

Quilt Square - Inkscape

These are so easy to make I hope you'll try it.

I started making them when we were on vacation in Hawaii last fall. There are images of quilt squares all over the place; on walls, in sidewalks and on every gee-gaw in the tourist stores. I took a lot of pictures of them and have been converting them to .svg files.

This one is from scratch using the star tool on the Inkscape tool menu.

A year or so ago I did a written tutorial on how you can make a triangle using the star tool and then embellished that tutorial with instruction for making these other shapes.

Not adventuresome today? Here is the link for the svg download. I hope you know that you can change the colors of all the pieces and just print out the design if you are not inclined to use a digital cutter to cut out the pieces. I do that sometimes.

Irish Coffee - Inkscape and SCAL

How about a little Irish Coffee to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? YUMMY. In the one I actually cut I used patterned/blended paper for the coffee so that the cream and coffee blended together. Unfortunately my printer isn't playing nice and I got a "frappe" since the brown printed more rasberry...hmmmm another idea for the file's use. DIY and download a pattern image from the internet and resize as needed, save as .jpg and place on your mat (you know how to do this don't you?)

You can also make the decal clover more of an etched look if you do the clover as a cut away (path/difference in Inkscape) so the coffee color shows through....just an idea.

If you are really adventuresome try a print/cut technique. Both SCAL and MTC have the feature and you could save all the paper piecing and glue. For you digistampers do a cut on white and color away!

Hope you get some use of this.

Flower Cart - Inkscape

Sorry it has been so long, just in a "no creativity" funk. Finally I got excited and made this flower cart card. I'm sharing the cart, not the rest of it. You'll have to "fish for yourself" to make it into the card. I used Inkscape to do the background, one of my files for the flower basket and a font for the text.

The background for the card is a filter in Inkscape called clouds. You can create the backgound and do a screen capture or convert to .bmp to print out for your card. I just added some circles to the top of the background paper and did a path/union to create the scallop effect and in SCAL I "placed" the background paper and then overlayed the scalloped shape on top and did a print/cut.

I hope to see someone create a file using the flower cart. If you'd let me see it I'd really appreciate it.

Hoping you learn how to fish with this really nice design.

Just a reminder I use Inkscape 0.48, SCAL 2.040 and a Cricut Expressions on a Mac.

Year of the Rabbit - Inkscape

I'm not sharing files today since I did not make this so this is a "learning how to fish" post.

I saw the design on google and downloaded it as a .jpg and converted it in Inkscape. Easy Peasy. Here is the link to clip art files for Year of the Rabbit.

Gung Hay Fat Choy means "Best wishes and Congratulations. Have a prosperous and good year".

This is a cuttable/printable graphic to help you and yours celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is a really big thing here in San Francisco.

Steps to Success

All you need to do is capture/download the graphic as you find it on the search. Depending on your system set up it will be either a .png or a .jpg.

Import the graphic into your favorite cutting program i.e. SCAL, MTC, or Inkscape.

Do a "trace" on it to convert it to something that will cut on your cutter.

Deleting Nodes

The end result in Inkscape 0.48 had way too many nodes to cut smoothly so I did a path/simplify to get rid of some of them but it distorted too badly. LOVE UNDO!

I am an SCAL user with the newest version 2.038 and have found that simplify in SCAL does a much better job reducing nodes without distortion. I don't have MTC so can't attest to it doing a better job. But you do want to try and reduce the nodes however works for you.

Obviously if you are just going to print it nodes don't matter.

It will also be fun to use for those Easter decorations. For an Easter egg

just drag the image down a bit to make an egg shape and in a bit to form an egg shape. This one has a white mat and the design is "cut" into a purple egg shape. In Inkscape I did a path/difference to get the effect.

I'd sure like to know if you completed this task and learned something about "how to fish".

Valentine Couple in Silhouette - Inkscape

I can't tell you how many iterations I went through for this final piece, but I learned a bunch about adjusting nodes and filters too. I chose a silhouette for the mannequins as I don't do well at faces and hair but with all the separate pieces you give it a go.

There are multiple cut pieces plus the stripe background paper. I printed the background and the black and white hearts onto matte photo paper. Everything else is paper piecing, of course you can cut the big hearts too.

Download just the .png file to print the whole thing as is.

TIP

When you finish a multi piece design create a new file and cut and paste the different elements onto the new file in order, I used back to front. The effect was that when I imported it into SCAL it came in layers in the order I wanted making it easier to find and turn off the layers as I cut the pieces. On this file you could rearrange by color too.

Mannequins: Create, Decorate, Cut - Inkscape

As my last post of 2010 or maybe my first post of 2011 I wanted to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year and to thank you for visiting a commenting on my Blog all year.

I made this card from a mannequin I got from the internet and then drew the clothes. It is a great exercise in working with the Inkscape tools and moving and shaping with the nodes tool.

HOW I DID IT
I searched google for mannequins as I wanted to start with a bare body. So many poses and really easy to convert in Inkscape.

Using the bezier tool I drew around the mannequin to create the clothes. Pushing, pulling and playing with the various ways you can change the shape of nodes was a great exercise and I learned a lot about manipulating the nodes to get the shape just right, or almost so.

The download gives you two models and a selection of clothes I did for you to cut in pretty patterns to use on the model. It's not just for paperdolls you know!.

The font for this card is Renaissance, it is free from a couple of places like dafont.com.

Nativity Snow Globe - Inkscape

This is a DIY project for you. I created the snow globe and a nativity scene to go into it, but you can have a whole set by creating your own image.

All are separate pieces so, using your own imagination, you can union/weld them together to make it a couple of cuts instead of many. Not included is the background paper.

Ring My Bell - Inkscape (take two)

Waaaaaayyyy back last year when there was only SCAL1 for the Mac I did this file and I loved it, and so did a lot of you. One of my biggest downloads at the time.

I decided to clean up the Blog and rid it of OLD stuff and found I still loved this file but it really needed help. I've learned so much in the last year and the software has come a long way so I decided to rework the file for those of you who might want it updated or those who never saw it in the first place.

I've connected the words so less paper pieces, cleaned up the holly leaves and generally made it more easily cutable for SCAL2 users.

Although the picture shows a nice background it is not included in the file since it is a "background" and really needs to be printed, nor is the "Merry Christmas". (have to leave you something to create on your own, don't you think?)

NOTE to SCAL2 users. The later versions of SCAL, the ones that have simplify do a much better job of reducing nodes than does Inkscape 0.48. I'm using SCAL 2.030. So try it out do speed up and smooth out the cutting.

Children on Pond - Inkscape Silhouette w/video

In response to a. "few". requests i have created a video on how to make your own framed silhouettes. I've provided all the pieces for download that you will need to practice until you are ready to "fish on your own".

I hope all of this makes sense to you and you will share what you create. Below you'll see what I did, but you can add things, not use some things..you are only limited by your imagination. I think they will do well in vinyl as well as card stock.

When you have your finished product you should have something that looks like this.

Antelope in Trees - Silhouette inkscape

I think I'm done with these. I've learned something with each one, better, easier ways to construct them. Still not confident I can do a video but I have another graphic that might work. Anyhooo. Today I have an antelope in the woods and an extra file...just the trees so you can add you own animal! How's that for getting off the hook.

To add an image to the file

Start with a clean silhouette of your choice
Convert it to a "path" if necessary.
Copy/past it into the tree file
Size it so that at least the bottom edge intrudes into the bottom of the frame and overlaps a branch or a trunk. This anchors the pieces together to make the design more stable.
Select both images and do Path/Union.
Check your work in View Outline to ensure nice connections. I use magnify to get a closer look and remove any stray nodes too and sometimes widen some.
I don't recommend path/simplify as it usually wonks the trees.

NOTE that anything you see that is white will cut out and need to be weeded carefully from the black pieces.

Problem? UNDO is your friend and try again.

Skater's on a Pond - Inkscape Silhouette

This is what it looks like CUT in black heavy cardstock.

Whilst cleaning the garage last week I came upon some old wrapping paper that had all these skaters and some trees. I scanned and then spent a few hours cleaning them up and separating them Now what, well of course you put them on a card.

Hours later after fighting "negative" space and reworking, and reworking I finally got it properly union'd together. Spatially I am inept and it was a bit frustrating. I've done several of this type of image but never with so much white space and so many characters to size and place. I'm thinking of doing a video to show you how it is done, or not!

The size is 6 x 4" to fit on a 5x7" card. A fair amount of weeding on this small size. I cut it over and over again taking out detail that didn't show up much anyway. If you are going to cut larger, say for a glass block or a mirror, you can add in more. It's only nodes you know.

This is the screen capture.

I think it will be very pretty when finished. I see glitter on the ice and some snow on the trees.....Yeah right, like I'm gonna do that.

Needless to say but I could have cut all the pieces separately and made it easier to construct, but where's the fun in that when you hone you skills and exercise your mind.

Disclaimer: I haven't done vinyl so can't say how all the detail will cut, but maybe in large size. I also cut only with Sure Cuts Alot (SCAL2 on the Cricut Expression) so can't say how it will do on a CraftRobo, nor what MTC does with it. You could let me know of course.

I sure hope you find some use for it and would love to see how YOU do it.

Cuttingboard Skinny Cook - Inkscape, Gel Pens

Someone on one of my forums was looking for something like this and I got intrigued about how to do it. GEL PENS of course. Cute on a wall in your kitchen I think. You do know how to cut/print don't you? Well I can't tell you since every cutter and software to cut is different, but I'm sure somewhere on your forums there is someone who knows.

Decorative Rocks - Inkscape

I don't know where this came from since I was headed somewhere else but here they are. These can be used as:

stepping stones along a path
add the leaf fossil for wall art
just like we did before we could cut everything just "paint" on them...ladybugs, names and dates
make a card "you rock", "you are my rock" "you rock my life"
purchase a bag of skeletal leaves and add them to the rock
write on them with your gel pens
treat them as digi stamps and shade them for dimension

Need I say more? Learning how to fish is my goal for you!

Decorative Stones or Rocks

Sometimes you have to be a bit early and today is my day. Just in case you want to get a head start on the big halloween holiday here's my entery. I see this as a window/wall decoration. on all those treat bags you make, or cut in vinyl and stuck to your pumpkin instead of cutting IT too.

I designed it to cut in several pieces so that you can mix and match what you want. The thought bubble I think is good if you added a witch or something to make a party invitation. Bats are good too!

Get well Soon - Print and Cut - Inkscape

I learned a bunch in the last few days and finally came up with a design for using what I learned.

This Get well card is a print/cut/emboss multi-media design but fast and simple. Truth be told the background of the card was a piece of white card stock cut to 10x7" that I embossed. but I mailed the card before I took a picture of it .... duh! But it looks just as nice on a piece printed cardstock I think.

The pink piece was cut on my cutter. It is 5x3.5"

The white card with the roses and the words is printed on my printer. It is 4.5x2.5. I used Export Bitmap to get the card into a .png format for my APS Elements but you can print from Inkscape just fine.

These measurements are only a guide to how to figure out the sizes of each of the 3 pieces. It is much easier to see when you create than figure out the sizes.

One of the things to share is how to get the message in multiple colors. I learned from Carolyn (cuttingtime) how to take a photograph into Inkscape and type the letters onto the image and then "clip" it so that I got the letters cut out of the photo. This takes a pretty fat font to get the effect but well worth the effort for something really unique. See a link to the tutorial in the Resource section below.

I was able to take the two pieces (the pink and the text card) into SCAL and align them, paying attention to the size of the little white card and the cut the pink piece. Then I turned off the text layer and cut the pink one.

I took the white text card into APS Elements and sized it to the size I picked in SCAL and printed it and cheated and hand cut it down to fit nicely inside the pick border. You can also print from Inkscape.

NOTE: you will/should probably delete the background paper since it is a filtered fill and even tho it will print it is awkward to move around. Inkscape does print it howver and you might want it on a separate layer to print.

Art Deco Embellishment - Inkscape

I made these as wall art for myself. I thought you might like to make some too.

The file is ready to cut on your digital cutter. You get the 4 embellishments plus the scalloped oval and the mat. How you mount them will be determined by the frame size you choose or just use the embellishment as is on cards or whatever.

They also print beautifully on matte photo paper.

Cherry Swag - Inkscape DigiStamp

This is a swag I made with Inkscape using Bend (instructions for using Bend in the Summer Fun Video Tutorial I created last week. See below.)

Anywhoo. This would make a great Digi Stamp to color with the Copic Markers, or use your Cri-Kit gel pens and cut the background out on your cutter, or since I've included a separate image with colored pieces you could just cut the pieces out on your cutter.

Use the single one to try out making your own swag by creating a union of a couple of them and then applying the Bend Effect Editor. It is really fun.

Summer Fun Title - Inkscape

Are those photos stacking up waiting to make the summer vacation scrapbook page or wordbook? Well I've been playing with text and fonts and this came out just fine for me. I hope you can find a use for it.

I used a font called Ravie for the words, and Half sunburst for the background. Both can be found for free download.

Oval Mirror Inkscape

Another frame for your collection. It sizes up quite nicely. I see this as a mirror. It is in 3 pieces. the outside frame, an inside oval that will/can be cut out or move it off and delete it for a solid, and a backing mat.

You get the mirror look by cutting the inside oval with a metallic paper or by overlaying silver foil.

I also cut it out of metallic card stock and centered a silhouette inside. Looks great especially in a large size.

Lots of ideas here.

Shell Frames - Digi Stamp, Gel Pens, Inkscape

A couple of nice frames to share today. Although they will cut if they are large enough, I envision them as digi stamps where you use your gel pens and cut around them with a background mat. I did not include the background mat since you will make it after you get the size you want.

You of course can have the inside frame cut out by a path difference on the inner piece.

This works great as a vinyl project as well as a cutout. You could even gel it!

Two pieces. The inside white can be made to cut as a separate piece or keep them together and you will have a center cut out.

Add you name or monogram and use it for not cards. How about house number?

Mixed Media Happy Fathers Day

A little cutting, a little gel pen, some nice background paper and some glue. Easy!

Well not exactly. I don't usually do so much paper piecing but men's cards just need some masculine background and I wanted to play with the banner filled with text that I gel pen'd. I also did an inset or paintbrush technique to fill in the font some. It looks better in real life than on this picture.

I'm feeling so generous today that I'm giving you all the pieces, layered and ready to work with, including a SCUT file layered too. All you need to do is pick the background paper and the contrasting paper and pens.

Everything is cut except the text which is gel pen'd ontop of the inner banner shape.

The only thing you have to know how to do is:

How to select layers in SCAL
Understand turning layers on and off as needed
Pen first, cut last
Ensure you don't move the carriage when you change from pen to blade
Don't unload the paper between pen and cut steps, just reload last.

That's about it.

Mixed Media Wedding Card - DigiStamp

I did this design in Inkscape and then played with it in both PhotoShop Elements and SCAL2.

This is the one I took into PhotoShop and printed on photo paper. I'm pretty sure you could just do it in PhotoShop but you'd have to do the bow as a .jpg. A couple of background layers, embossed.

I imported the .svg design into SCAL2 and used the gel pens and this is what I got. I used the black glitter pens from Cri-Kits. It also works as a .jpg from PhotoShop but won't be separated and it is hard to separate.

Because the bow is across the top of the heart I'll probably color it in and play with coloring in parts or all of the heart. A project for another day

I set up all the separate pieces in the Inkscape file in layers. The text, the Heart and the Ribbon. You want the Ribbon layer as the top layer or it hides behind the hears. I toyed with the idea of a combo pen/cut in SCAL2 and haven't gotten there yet.

The text is a definite gel, the heart is three layers and could probably be cut or a combo pen/cut.

The bow itself could be cut but the string ribbon has to be penned. I'm trying to figure out how to make it a cut. Most probably by penning it on a background piece but I'm not sure how that will look.

Anyway just sharing with you.

This Inkscape .svg design has so many possibilities for you to play with. Fill it with a silhouette, with your monogram. house number, make some note cards and on and on. Cut it on your digital cutter with Sure Cuts Alot or any other programs for digital cutters. You could even use your gel pens and draw it.

Thank You Card - Inkscape

I did my Thank You cards today and I'm sharing the pieces so you can DIY your own.

I'm going to print a bunch without the THANK YOU along with the Mother's Day card from the post below and just have them around as needed. I can stamp, cut, or hand write the appropriate words as I go.

Now that you have all the pieces you can arrange them to your liking and then cut, print, or treat as a digi-stamp, some or all of the pieces where ever your mood takes you.

I "exported bitmap" of the Inkscape design to Adobe PhotoShop Elements and printed on photo matte paper and mounted on colored c/s cards. Then I embossed the whole front. My DH says "I'm getting better at this", so did my sister.

I do see the Thank You is a little off center, but since these all go to family or friends, they already know I'm a little off center anyway.

Hope you can make use of these.

All Occasion Card - Inkscape

Hi,

The design was drawn in Inkscape, taken to SCAL and printed with gel pens on my cutter. I filled in the stems and petal and font by hand. The whole process took more time than I had since I needed 6 in a hurry to get them in the mail.

OK so I'm bad, I cheated on the rest of them. I filled them in in Inkscape, made a bitmap copy, taking it into Adobe PhotoShop Elements, and printed 4 on a page. I then glued the image onto white card stock

I did emboss to add some flair and although simple I like it and I'm sure the girls will too.

This card will be my mainstay for awhile as all I have to do is change the message. Clever huh?

The files I'm sharing has one somewhat difficult part and that is the stems and leaves so you can download it. and add the flowers of your choice and gel pen or photoshop and print with the .jpg file :O)

Kitty Digi Stamp, Inkscape

I found some vintage transfer patterns that create digi stamps that print just beautifully on my cutter using gel pens. See Resource for the site that has this and many more for non-commercial use.

I cleaned up one and left it as is. After taking the image into SCAL I did a shadow/blackout to create the mat to cut around the drawing. It takes about 10 minutes to print out.

Then I decided to excise the shoe from the Kitty and made that a cut file for decorating and adding some dimension. It turned out great too.

In this picture I just show the shoe sans any additional embellishments but you get the idea.

California Poppy - Inkscape

In California, poppies are like a weed, they just come up wherever they want to. All over the meadows, along the freeway, just beautiful until they pop up in the middle of your vegetable plot.

Just for grins I saved some that were in my vegetable plot and decided to see if they'd make it in a vase and by gosh they did. Now after 60+ years of dealing with them I now have them in vases! Who knew?

Lots you can do with this file. Gel pen the outline, or cut each petal individually and assemble into a flower and then using fine line pens add the veins that make them so beautiful and delicate looking.

Oh, the real petals are smooched together I just showed them separate to facilitate cutting!

Swirl Heart Embellishment - Inkscape, SCAL2, Gel Pen

Thought I'd try something pretty. Hope you can use it.

The image came from a font and was edited to make it work with the gel pens. The design itself was created in Inkscape.

There are three layers to the file. The dark background is a solid piece cut separately, the Pen layer is printed on cardstock with Gel Pens in SCAL2 and then the white layer is cut around the penned image also in SCAL2. I have set up all the appropriate layers in the SCAL2 file. My Cricut Expressions did the rest of the work.

The Inkscape .svg file is all on one layer.

Adding something in the middle of the heart is up to you, either something to pen with the rest of the design or another embellishment added. Ditto if you want to color in the outer layer of the heart. Lots of possibilities for a nice Mom's day card.

Stick Figures - Gel Pens, Inkscape, SCAL2

What do you do on a sorta blah day? You create stick figures of course.

I drew these in Inkscape 0.47 using rounded rectangles for the body parts. I made the limbs, hairbow and Goldy's hair using the font Rose Water (see RESOURCE). The limbs are made using the capital L, just twisted around to the right angles. The baseball caps I just drew with ovals and rectangles.

After I finished the figures looked like a marshmallow, hence the name the Mallow Family. My DH thought they were cute and wondered where the DOG was. I guess that is my next project.

I colored them in in Inkscape so they would show up nicely in the picture. After "printing" the outline in SCAL2 with gel pens (turned our perfectly) you can color them with copic markers or if you are very clever you can cut out pieces to add clothes.

Character Map Template - you will want to get this template from Cleversomeday. There are a huge number of characters on this font and in Inkscape it is hard to find them. Kay has this template that captures all the glyphs onto one page by keyboard character to use. It is terrific.

MOM TAG - INKSCAPE AND GEL PENS

This is for my GURU Kay (firstcut,cleversomeday)

I have resisted Kay's paint bucket method for forever. She and I have discussed this again and again. I could never get the result she (and then scappydew) got using it. THEN last week Kay did a video and for the first time I saw the benefits and had an immediate use for it. Filling in fonts with gel pens.

I'd like to issue a challenge for everyone who has benefitted from Kay's undying support for others, her willingness to help, her unique style of "geekiness" and all the lists tutorials, tips and tricks we all benefit from. I suggest you go see her video and try this yourself in her honor.

Adding Graphic Layers in SCAL2

This is really a continuation of the Puzzle lesson below for SCAL2 users. Even if you don't use the puzzle as a cut file you might find this useful.

Open in SCAL2.

I made a separate layer in SCAL for the graphics. This worked well and I printed the GEL layer first and then the cut layer. Here is a quick video on how it is done.

NEED BIGGER PIECES or have a small mat? Separate the pieces either in Inkscape or SCAL, make a separate layer for each piece, be sure and align after you resize. The size varies because of the innies/outies so I worked in pairs 1 and 2, then 2 and 3. This is tedious but once you have one done, all the rest of the puzzles you want to make is simple.

I glued a piece of heavy background paper to a piece of backing from a 12x12 tablet, like chipboard. It cut just fine, on high pressure.

Me who can't see found it a lot easier to color while the pieces were still stuck to the mat especially the one with the big pictures.

Jigsaw Puzzle - Inkscape and SCAL2

I had the opportunity last week to help someone. She wanted a jigsaw puzzle for a school bulletin board. It took my poor brain a while to figure how how to do it and I shipped it off to her. She was successful in cutting it and has already lost it to someone else so she had to cut it again.

You might want to read all the way to the end since you will need to make some decisions before you get too far along.

How I Did It

SHORT VERSION

Turn on "grid" (VIEW/GRID) and using "document properties" set the grid at 2.00 x 2.00. Turn on "snap to grid" for now.

Create a 2"x2" square (Path/Union 0.47) and duplicate it a bunch of times fitting each squre onto the grid. Snap to Grid helps line them up nicely. You can fit all the squares together. NO STROKE

Make the "outies". A circle with a rectangle union together. Ensure that the rectangle is centered on the circle. NO STROKE

Start in the upper left hand corner and work across. For outies do a path/union for "innies" do a path difference. I found that doing the innie first helped lay the outie over it to ensure that they are aligned. Magnify as needed to see.

I randomized the placement to make it easier to put the puzzle together.

When you have it all done, you have a couple of choices. The puzzle will cut just fine altogether, or you can separate and cut individually. You might want both. SAVE the basic puzzle(s). Since you can "draw" on your puzzle image in a separate layer and Gel before you cut. I found that adding the graphics in SCAL was easier than in Inkscape to position.

Take a "screen capture of it for a diagran for putting it back together after you've cut it. SAVE.

Gel Pen Floral Frame

I've been playing the the mini gel pens on my Cricut using SCAL and Inkscape. So many ideas, so little time.

I'm not sure whether to say Draw or Print when using the pens and then cutting around them so I'm just going to say GEL and CUT.

I'm sharing both an SVG and an SCAL file with you today. The SCAL file has the Gel and the Cut layers in place, the Inkscape one does not.

If you need help working with layers in SCAL see my video on how to do it. Working with layers in Inkscape is almost identical so you can transfer the knowledge you gain from my video and translate to Inkscape or any other cutting software that has layers.

To make this a border instead of a frame, just remove the inside center box. You might even be able to ungroup and get just one of the lengths, but be careful to regroup before you move it.

SCAL2 Draw and Cut Digi Stamps

I love to do drawings for my cards and have played around with digi stamps but had problems figuring out how to cut around the image to make elements. I've been frustrated with the Gel Pens I've tried to use in my E until I got some new ones from CRI-KITS

The carrier allows their pens to slip in easily
a magnet holds them in place
The metal carrier fastens into the E easily
the COLORS are georgous, I used the metallic

You need to try them? Why? Because you can do this. No skipping, dripping, or messy fingers. The pens are"fine" to get all the little details.

OK, you say but..... "what do I do to cut around it so I can use it?" I have an answer to that too,

I have the newest version for the Mac (yea) and am so pleased to be able to finally do this.

NOTES - Things to know

If you don't have a nice shadow around your image to use as the cut piece, duplicate your image and do the black out, you may have to delete nodes.

You can always use the shape palette and make a cut out of it surrounding the draw imaage.

You can start in Inkscape and manually trace around the image with the bezier tool.

Do NOT "unload" the mat at the end of the "draw". Try not to move the carriage when you exchange the pen carrier with the blade carrier, you'll throw the alignment off. This is one reason why I prefer to draw first and then cut. The pen goes into the E much easier than the blade and having it more in the middle of the mat helps with the loading.

Yes, it is sort of an informercial since Cri-Kits sent me the pens in advance to try them out and I was so impressed I did the video for them. NO MONEY changed hands however!!

A little whimsey today. No file (ooops see notes) just hope to put a smile on your face.

I have a beautiful lawn in front of my house EXCEPT for the big, and growing dead grass spot! GUESS WHY?

I made this sign and laminated it and put it in the middle of the brown blob I used to see as nice green grass.

I hope they get the message and you are still laughing.

HOW I DID IT

I designed the file in Inkscape to "print" not to cut but you are welcome to "grab" the .jpg file and make your own. Take the .jpg into any photo/drawing program, resize to a higher resolution and print.

OH WELL, I've had a couple of requests for the .svg file so here it is, there are lots of pieces to layer but if you want it... go for it!

TAKE THE .SVG TO A PHOTO/DRAWING PROGRAM
When I finished the drawing I did an "export bitmap" so that I could open in PhotoShop Elements, mine makes a .png file. I bumped up the resolution to 300 dpi to get a nice clean print. I printed it on fairly heavy print paper, not photo paper. You'll have to play with this a bit.

Photo to Cut File - Inkscape - Hybiscus VIDEO

A new video! This time I've taken a more complex photo and excised the flower to make a cut file.

With this technique you should be able to take your own (or someone else's) photo and get just the piece you want for your cut files.

I'm still not good at the voice recording but I'm OLD so you might cut me some slack.

Here's the original photo, which I will make available for download. After I did the video I got a .jgp of a Hybiscus leaf online from a botanical site and did the same technique to get the leaf for the final cut file.

You can use the drawing to Color, Paint, Print or cut and do all those things to the cut file. The creativity is up to you.

I'd love to see how you use the technique.

Birdhouse - Manual Trace in Inkscape Video Tutorial

I have such a time separating just the pieces I want from images and with a photo there are so many extra pieces and nodes it drives me crazy. I had a flash the other night about how to trace something easily. I have spent a bit of time figuring out how to show you how to do it.

I've done a video to show you the basic idea. You will need to know a bit about adding layers, moving nodes, and finishing off. Since the different versions of Inkscape treat paths differently you might have to adjust the path/union or path/object to path to get things to work well with SCAL2. I have no idea what you have to do to use in MTC but if you figure it out I'd be happy to add the instruction.

When to Use Manual Trace

When an image has lots of background noise
When you break apart an have a gazillion pieces (i.e. the leg is separated into to parts
When the image is shaded and Inkscape treats every color like an individual piece.
When you separate/trace by color and none of the layers have all the right pieces
When you only want some of the pieces.

NOTE: I have no idea which version of Inkscape or SCAL you are using so you'll have to be responsible for doing the proper Path/Union or Path/Object to Path to ensure that the Inkscape files translate to SCAL properly.

I'll do another video next week on tracing pieces that are rounded since you must drag nodes around and delete nodes to achieve smooth edges.

Making Cutouts in Objects - Inkscape 0.47 SCAL2, MTC

You Light Up MY LIFE - Inkscape 0.47 Valentine for My Guy

I got so busy and involved in doing the Video's I forgot that I had to make a card for my DH for Valentine's Day. He's not much for the hearts and flowers stuff so this is what I did for him.

You can make this lamp out of a polygon, some rounded rectangles, and a oval or two. See my Video on Make A Simple Basket for the techniques. Well a little fancy with the decoration on the lamp it is a flourish done with the bezier tool.

Of course you will have to find the flourish corners but they are pretty available. This one is from talanhart
