Holiday Thank You

I'm going to be a little lazy here and do my thank you cards the fast way since I have a lot of people to thank this year!  Since my dining table is my work space I just couldn't use it this week since we still have guests coming!

I created this card in Inkscape 47, exported it to Adobe Photoshop Elements, sized it and printed it on matte photo paper.  I might even send the file to Walgreens and for 9 cents this week I can have them print them!

I cut the darker blue mat and the white cardstock on my Cricut using SCAL2.

I will write my personal note on the inside under a THANK YOU stamp.

I'm sending you all a very greatfull THANK YOU for all the files, time, and help you've shared with me this year.

Etched Wine Glass Inkscape SCAL

I etched 6 Wine glasses yesterday.  Just the white part not the blue.  The rectangle around the whole image makes it easier to get the image off the mat as one STENCIL.  I would have taken a photo of the etched glasses but I have no sun in California today so they would not have shown up very well.

I used the ScoobyDew technique for Bluge and Warp text for Inkscape to create what I hope looks like a wine glass shape.  My DH recognized it on the glass so I guess I did ok.

I cut it in SCAL2 for MACINTOSH, but of course you could use Windows.  (I just like saying I have SCAL2 for Mac.) I used white contact paper, I think black would have been better as I had problems seeing the little bits for the inside of the R and the B and which side had the sticky so I could paste it into the letter after sticking the stencil on the glass.

I used Armour Etch that I got at Michaels with my coupon.  You really want a coupon since this stuff is not cheap.  I left it on about 15-20 minutes and it did OK.

Using a popsycle stick I was able to press down on all the edges to get a clean etch.  I'm pretty happy with them.

The glass stem is nothing more than a rectangle and an oval blended together with a path/union.  Don't forget that in Ink 47 you have to do a UNION on the rectangle.  Why, beats me but you do.

I'm pretty much gone for the next week or so doing my DIL, and Mother and Grandma thing so I'll see you in the New Year.

Happy Holiday to all of you and thanks for visiting my BLOG.

SNOWflake BORDER/FRAME SCAL2 OR INKSCAPE

I just found a new BFF, my SCAL2 with FONTs on my Mac!

ScrappyDew did a tutorial earlier this week on creating and moving text in SCAL2.  I watched that and got a little interested.  Then two gals from my SCALHints forum asked questions about creating text.  One in Inkscape and one in SCAL2.  I did my best to answer their questions, and got more interested.

I figured it was time to try it out.  This design was done with two FONTS.  One a snowflake one and a nice round text, and the rounded rectangle shape.  It was fast, easy and cut beautifully.

Then I thought someone would want an .svg and I've seen several questions asking how to get it to SCAL.  I did it by cutting the file out in SCAL, taking a picture of it and importing it into Inkscape and going through the trace bitmap bit.

Here is my opinion of the benefits of using SCAL2 to create text.

1.  It is so much easier to identify which font you want to use.  The font menu is SOOO much clearer and faster than Inkscape.

2.  You don't have to worry about converting a font to a path, it just is!

3.  You don't have to get rid of NODES that cause jaggies and slow cutting.

4.  It welds nicely, you can group, move, and copy, paste, etc, etc,

There are probably a bunch more things I like about it, but you really should try it yourself.

Holiday and Birthday Card - Inkscape, SCAL, Cricut

I made two cards this week. I thought you might like to see.  No files to download since nothing here is hard to do on your own.  If you MUST, feel free to capture the image.

This one doesn't show up as well as I think it looks.  The blue background has been embossed with my brand new Sizzix Texture Boutique.  On sale at Michaels.  The tree and the blue snowflake are sprayed with silver glitter.  Neither shows up in the photo and caused problems with glare so I sorta washed it out with Adobe Photoshop Elements.

I welded/union snowflakes down the edge of a rectangle about half way to get the border.

This next card is for my daughter for her 50th birthday which you can only imagine how she feels about it.  She's a big coffee drinker.  It is also embossed but it does show up in the picture.  Inside it says It's Just another Birthday!

My thanks to Wanda for her very cute coffee flourish.  I hope she thinks I did her proud.  Drop by her site and get one for your self.

I think it is VERY IMPORTANT, not to mention RIGHT, to acknowledge where you got the files you use and share.  Where would we all be without the generosity of creative, giving people?

Oh, I created them in Inkscape .47 and cut them in SCAL2 with my wonderful Macintosh!

I wish you all a Happy Holiday Season.

Decorative Frames Inkscape 47 and SCAL2 Macintosh

I'm so EXCITED.  I made these two frames in Inkscape .47 and THEN, the really big news is I took them into SCAL2 for the MAC!!! and separated the file into layers.

This is a big deal for Mac users who have not had an SCAL2 version until this week.

SCAL depends on the benefice of users to write the tutorials for their products and I found one done by HeatherM on how to move from Inkscape to SCAL2 and separate the two images into 2 layers so you could have one file but only cut the one you want.

I hope you can use one or both of the frames and that you try it in SCAL2 one of these days.

Working with Rotate - Inkscape Flower, Poinsettia, Ornament

I'm having a wonderful time learning to use the new features, and discovering old features in Inkscape.  This flower was created using a leaf and then playing with "rotate" in Inkscape.  The stem is done with the pencil and "spiro" feature.

This one was done with a different leaf with 6 rotations. It is 3 layers plus the center. I call it poinsettia.  It will print as well as cut.

OK one more.  I took the poinsettia and created this tree and wreath for those of you who love to paper piece and glue. The one green element is duplicated and formed into the wreath or tree shape and welded to form the base (mat) for the other red and yellow layers.

LEARNING HOW TO FISH

LEAVES are on a wonderful file created by Tingha and is on the SCAL Forum
ROTATE video is from CUTTINGTIME.  I used the one called Using Rotation to help with designing files for your cutter.

All of the pieces are layered (not in layers) and you'll need Inkscape to pull them apart for cutting.  I don't have SCAL2 so am unsure if you can break apart there.

If you have any problems with the files, please let me know.  Comments are alway appreciated.

Thank you!
