Text in a Spiral - Inkscape .46

So many new ideas out there this week.  I just had to try this. The spiral tool in Inkscape has never been my friend, until now.  This is a great project for digi stamps I think.

HOW I DID IT

I'm on a Mac so some steps may be different for you!.
  • Open Inkscape and draw a spiral with the spiral tool

  • Path/Object to Path
  • Type your words.
I found that unless I put the ** in the phrase ran together, your results may be different.
**round and round**

  • Path/Object to Path (if you are using Ink 47 do a Object/Ungroup, Path Union.
  • Object/Raise to Top - this is a must else the spriral will go around the words, not good.
  • Select both objects
  • Effects/Generate from Path/Pattern on Path.  Ensure that the Menu settings are like this.  Repeated for sure and stretched depending on how you like the results.  I found Stretched worked better for me.
  • Apply
Note:  you can use "live preview" to see what is going to happen but I found just letting it happen, worked for me since I'm the UNDO queen.
  • Drag the text off the circle and you can delete the spiral.  The Scrappy Dew vid suggests that you use "text to path" but you only get one iteration of the phrase, but you do get the ability to adjust.  Try both ways. (video link below)
BIG NOTE:  Cutting these is possible but just printing it works the best for me. See the link to "this is the coolest thing ever" begun by Austin with lots of support and additions by others for how to cut out the printed design on your CRICUT.

Here are a couple of other things I did with the spiral.  You can and should play with this alot.  Experiment with different shapes and words and fonts and mixtures.  You'll be doing digi stamps in no time.

TIP: the size of the spiral vs the size of the text determines the space between spirals.  This flower image is larger text on smaller spiral.

The green is a flourish enlarged and stretched.

LEARNING HOW TO FISH - Resources for MUCH more instruction and tips and hints
There are several sites and videos I suggest you visit to learn more about some of this:  It's where I learned to fish!

  • Cutting Time - for more to do with the spiral tool and even more HERE.  I didn't see this last one until recently and after I posted this.  MEA Culpa to Carolyn.
  • ScappyDew for Text in a Circle and Cleversomeday  lifting text off the circle - two video's on creating and working with text in a Circle
  • AustinGM's post on the SCAL forum for cutting out printed picture.  You really need to read all of this if you are interested in "digi stamps" or anything where you want to cut out to color yourself.
  • Cleversomeday - how to cut a mat that exactly fits the image.  This is in addition to the SCAL forum post, but Kay did post a link to this as well.

Please do not hesitate to correct me or add your own experience through the comments.  We are all still learning how to fish.
